Adding a screen porch or sunroof maybe be the perfect renovation idea to turn your ho-hum house into the perfect living space for you and your family.

Most people think about their house in terms of number of bedrooms, bathrooms and if the kitchen is up to date. Others think about the storage space, like a garage or attic. And still others approach it from the “comfortable space” perspective, as in “when I have time to just sit and relax, I love to do so in the (fill in the blank) room.”

But living in the greater Charleston, SC area may mean having to buy a smaller home — one without that comfortable space — and then adding it. Depending on your budget and lot space, you can do a major addition or simply add a screen porch or sunroom.

We’ve included some pictures here of a recently completed screen porch in Mt. Pleasant. The Lowcountry is perfect for this kind of addition, given the long stretches of warm temperatures and very short, mild winter.

If the summer temperatures are too much for the outdoor living, the addition can be closed in with windows and the space climate-controlled with a small heat pump. Of course, this will add to the overall cost of the project.
